Many people are considering finding a home income opportunity that will give them a new career or supplement their current income.  Direct sales are the fastest growing type of small business, and there are plenty of new products, services, and well-known companies that can be incredibly successful as a start up business.

Before you sign up to become a multi-level marketing entrepreneur, there are a few things you may want to consider.

How Much Money Do I Need to Invest Up-Front?

There are virtually no home income opportunities that are totally free.  Some require as little as a $10 brochure starter kit, others thousands of dollars where leads are supplied for you.  Some require carrying an inventory of product, investment in special equipment and a computer, of course.

You should know if your investment includes training, and how is it provided?  Will you have to travel to gain the knowledge and skills to operate your business?  What exactly does your investment get you?

How Do I Know if it is a Legitimate Business or a Scam?

The Fair Trade Commission defines multi-level marketing, direct sales, network marketing, or pyramid selling as the promoting and sales of a product or service through the recruiting of a sales force that forms a downline or network of people that all receive compensation from the actual sales generated.  Illegal pyramids give commissions only through the recruitment of new members rather than paying employees based on their sale of products.

In choosing an enterprise, be sure you are marketing a product or service, and the greatest percentage of income comes from those sales.  Do not be dazzled by the fabulous incomes reported by the company’s top salespersons, rather, look at the income disclosure published by the company or, better yet, look it up on the Federal Trade Commission’s website www.fcc.gov/ and with the Better Business Bureau to see how much the average income is per person and the drop out rate.

How Much Support Will I Get from the Parent Company?

After the initial introduction to the product and the marketing plan, you should expect to get continual training from the company.  Usually this is conducted by the company’s top producers who will teach you their tricks to success.  Some of this is done in weekly sales meetings, seminars, online newsletters and webinars.  If you feel that you need more intense training there are helpful online trainers that will coach you through their successful sales programs – for a fee.

Any new endeavor will require a new set of skills and practice.  Do not be discouraged if it seems that you are getting nowhere – think of your early contacts as your training grounds.  The guys at the top weathered plenty of ups and downs before they got where they are now; but they stuck with it.

If you determine that you would like to give a home income opportunity a try, our suggestion is to do your research, and then go for it.  It can be fun, challenging, exciting, and hopefully, financially rewarding.
